About the Apprenticeship Alumni & Friends
The Apprenticeship Alumni and Friends are graduates and supporters of the Apprenticeship in Ecological Horticulture program at the UCSC Farm & Garden. This six-month, full-time training program takes place annually at the University of California, Santa Cruz campus as part of UCSC’s Center for Agroecology & Sustainable Food Systems (CASFS).
Since 1967, more than 1,400 apprentices have been trained in the organic fields, gardens, orchards and greenhouses at UC Santa Cruz, learning not only how to raise food and flowers, but how to make the food system itself more sustainable by addressing issues of social justice. They are today’s organic farmers, market gardeners, urban agriculturists, school garden teachers, and others working to promote local, healthy food in communities across the country and worldwide.
Apprenticeship alumni and members of the Friends of the UCSC Farm & Garden are partners in supporting this unique training program. They contribute funds and volunteer energy to maintain the Farm & Garden sites, provide scholarships and other support for Apprentice program participants, and develop public education projects to promote sustainable farming and gardening in the community. You can learn more about supporting the Apprenticeship at the Support Us page.
The Grow a Farmer website was developed to serve not only CASFS Farm & Garden alumni, but other beginning organic farmers and gardeners with resources, event information, training opportunities, and updates from Apprenticeship staff and graduates. Alumni members can also create and update their profiles, add their farms and other projects to the “Where Are They Now?” map, contact other alumni, and access job and land listings by logging onto the CASFS Alumni page.
