Nancy Vail and Jered Lawson

After finishing the Apprenticeship and moving on to jobs at CASFS and with the Community Alliance with Family Farmers, Nancy Vail (1997 graduate) and Jered Lawson (1994 graduate) founded Pie Ranch, a unique learning farm situated on the San Mateo County coast, just south of Pescadero.

Pie Ranch serves children, high school youth, and young adults from throughout the San Francisco Bay Area with education programs and farm stays.  They provide aspiring farmers with the skills and experience in sustainable farming, farm education, and small-farm marketing through a year-long residential training program. Pie Ranch is also engaged in regional advocacy efforts where they collaborate with a range of food system stakeholders to bring about more sustainable food system policies and practices, to preserve the region's productive agricultural land, and to increase access to farmland for emerging farmers.

In addition to these programs, Pie Ranch grows a diverse array of crops using ecologically sustainable methods, operates a roadside weekend farm stand and a Community-Supported Egg-share program, and hosts public work and play days on our farm on the third Saturday of every month.

Read more about Pie Ranch at their website. And check out this great video about the project called The Whole Pie.
